The film is about being repressed and entrapped. Lester is stuck in a job and life he hates simply because he is not brave enough to quit and leave his wife. On the face of things; everything seems fine for Lester. Fitts is in a similar situation; gay but unable to admit it due to society. He is so trapped in the closet that he actual pretends to be against homosexuality. Lester begins to break out from his "prison" and this encourages Fitts to instinctively follow his own natural urges and kisses Lester. Fitts, however, is so ashamed about the incident that it leads to the events in the end. (Trying not to spoil).

He was gay, he thought there was something wrong with him, he couldn't accept himself, and that's why he was constantly talking about how horrible gay people are. He thought Lester was gay, he finally came out, in his own way, by trying to kiss him; it turned out Lester wasn't gay, but then he killed him because Lester knew that he was gay, and he didn't want anyone to know.
